Black walnut has become a very popular choice of wood for furniture nowadays. So popular in fact, that there is a deluge of mass-produced cabinets, tables, and chairs made of black walnut or walnut veneer on the market.

Even for a naturally beautiful wood like black walnut, it takes special attention and care to bring out its full potential.

These tables were hand finished with a Japanese Kanna (hand-plane), which takes clean shavings off the surface by severing the wood fibers with a sharp blade. This preserves the grain structure of the wood, resulting in a shimmering surface as seen above. Sanding on the other hand, destroys the fibers on the surface, leaving behind a dull finish which hides the true character of the wood.
